The burnt doctor couple at their home hospital
Rajiv Bhattacharya, 37, and Anusuya Bhattacharya, 32, were burnt to death in a fire at their home in the capital's Hatirpule. They were admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on Wednesday morning. Doctors said Rajib's condition was critical.
Perth Shankar Pal, a resident doctor at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said doctor Rajiv Bhattacharya had 87 per cent burns and his wife Anusuya Bhattacharya had 20 per cent burns. Samant Lal Sen, coordinator of the Burn Institute, told Prothom Alo that the couple was brought to the hospital around 4 am today. Rajiv's condition is worse. He has been placed on life support.
Regarding the fire, Samanta Lal Sen told Prothom Alo, "I have heard that it was from a sanitizer. When Rajiv went to pour the sanitizer from one bottle to another, it fell down a bit. This caused his body to catch fire from the fire of cigarette or mosquito coil. When his wife went to save him, he too was burnt. They have a seven-year-old daughter. The girl survived because she was at her grandfather’s house. ’The doctor urged everyone to be careful when using sanitizers.
Rajiv Bhattacharya's cousin Tapu Bhattacharya told Prothom Alo, "I heard that there was a fire from the sanitizer. Can't say right yet. How did that happen. Apart from the two of them at home, Anusuya's father was in another room. He himself is very ill. 'The doctor said about the current condition of the couple, the doctors are trying for Rajiv. Now the relatives trust in the Creator. Anusuya has been kept on sleeping pills. Tapu Bhattacharya said Rajiv Bhattacharya is a doctor in the Department of Neuro Surgery at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College University and Anusuya Bhattacharya is working as a private medical doctor in the capital.
